Companion to Your Study of The Book of Mormon – Daniel Ludlow – 3 Stars

Companion to Your Study of The Book of Mormon – Daniel Ludlow – 3 Stars

Title: A Companion to Your Study of the Book of Mormon
Author: Daniel Ludlow
Publisher: Deseret Book
Year: Original Hard Cover – 1976; Softcover 1996; Currently Out of Print (Available electronically through Deseret Book Bookshelf)

Rating:   3 STARS

Price and Purchasing Options: This book is currently out of print, and is not available in the stores on online for new.  However, both the hard cover and softcover got great distribution, and has rotated through numerous libraries.  This means that you will find a copy almost any day at any second-hand option.  They are at nearly every Deseret Industries any day of the week, as well as on eBay (here), and Amazon (used) all for only a few dollars.  It would be recommended to get it through those channels.  This book is available electronically through Deseret Book Bookshelf – however, I don’t do digital books myself.

Review: This is a good commentary, and a stronger option that expected.

Ludlow did a small series where he covered each of the standard works.  This is the smallest and easiest to read through of that line, but it is also a great place to start and get a feel for Ludlow.  This was a book I first picked up just to mix up my Book of Mormon study, but it was one of the stronger commentaries on the Book of Mormon I have ever read.  It was short and concise with strong content and ideas.

In the format of the book you will need to have your own scriptures with you, so it is aptly name “A Companion to Your Study of the Book of Mormon” because you will need to make it a companion to your study in order to go through it.  You will need to read your scriptures and then bounce back and forth between the two books.  With that being said, it is worth it.

Ludlow has a way of not beating around the bush, and jumping right in to each of the meat of the commentary.  You are not going to get anything earth shattering, but you will get a deep and unique view of common concepts – and you get to see a unique element of how Ludlow thinks.

This is a great place to gain a respect and interest in Ludlow and his contribution to the study of Mormonism.

Although, this is a short review, I would recommend this book and give it a strong three stars.  It was almost four stars, but doesn’t really cross that line where I think that everyone should push through this one… although I think everyone would enjoy it.

Suggestions:  My suggestion is to hit up Deseret Industries tomorrow and pick this up for a couple of bucks.  Next time you go through the Book of Mormon include this as a supplement to your study.  It will be worth it.

I hope you have enjoyed this review, and I encourage your to follow this blog as I update more reviews in the coming days, weeks, months, etc.  Please feel free to also follow my YouTube page – however, I enjoy writing more than being on camera!
