Price and
Purchasing Options: This book had great distribution and was really
popular. Of course, you can still get it
directly from Deseret Book or from Amazon, but you should see this nearly any
visit to any second hand store with LDS Materials. I’m pretty sure I see it every visit to
Deseret Industries, for a couple of dollars at most.
Review: I have
a great love for President Hinckley, and if I’m permitted, he is one of my
favorites. However, his biography is
just okay.
A few of the things that you take away from the biography
are the following:
President Hinckley was a wonderful man, that worked hard
for the church.
He worked for the church his entire life for the most
part. This book made him a little un-relatable. He was definitely trained by the living
prophets and apostles throughout his life, but he was trained by prophets and apostles. The same thing that makes him a remarkable
leader in the church, is the same thing that kind of sets up apart from being
someone that you can totally relate to.
Most of the biography are his international travels, and
some hyper focused on the typical prophetic comments in such biographies.
I would recommend the reading for the intent of getting
to know a modern day prophet of God better, or if you are a big fan of
President Hinckley. Outside of that you
could skip this book, and probably not miss anything. I would recommend before this the “Teachings”
or “Talk” of Gordon B. Hinckley. Those
writings and compilations have more application to your development than his
biography.
Suggestions: If you love Hinckley, go a head and read it…
but if it isn’t a priority, jump into his teachings and talks instead.
