The Second Comforter – Denver Snuffer – 2 Stars

The Second Comforter – Denver Snuffer – 2 Stars

Title: The Second Comforter: Conversing with the Lord Through the Veil
Author: Denver Snuffer, Jr.
Publisher: Mill Creek Press
Year: Softcover 2006

Rating:   2 STARS

Price and Purchasing Options: This book for the most part can only be acquired onAmazon, and you will pay around $20.99 retail for it.  This book will never be seen at Deseret Book (as he had left the church in recent years), and might rarely be found at a Deseret Industries.  So if you want this book – I would hit up Amazon or Barnes & Noble and check eBay (here) for a value copy.

Review:  This book was one of the bigger disappointments.  On one hand I applaud the attempt to create more dialogue on the Second Comforter – which is an important doctrinal topic in the church that is rarely discussed openly or highlighted (for various reasons).  On the other hand, the content of the book is lacking, which made me feel more uncomfortable about the book to begin with.

That content – or lack of coherent discussion on the Second Comforter - really highlighted that the book was more sensational than anything.  It was attempting to address a touchy topic to draw attention, and I assume sell books.  Although, there are some reasonable ideas and decent content in the book – most of the book isn’t actually coherent to the topic, and doesn’t reveal or share any systematic path to obtaining the Second Comforter.

For those who have avidly studied the Second Comforter (s Personal Visitation of Christ), the book was lacking in direct and reliable references or reasonable interpretations.  For those who are passive students of the topic, they have found this book to be more meaningful – which is kind of what is scary.  There is a lack of open dialogue on the topic, but there is plenty of resources for those who seek them out.

It is highly recommended that if the topic interests you enough to buy a book like this on it – to take some time beforehand and study some core source material.  I would recommend studying Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, then work through some discussions by Bruce R. McConkie.  From there jump into reading through the Book of John in the New Testament, and 2 Peter keeping this idea in mind.  Get a core idea from source material – and then read this book.

If you have a firmer foundation on the topic you are less likely to be swayed or excited about the content in this book.

He starts every chapter with a personal experience, most of which do not coherently connect with the topic being discussed in the chapter.  He used a few chapters to review some chapters in the scriptures, and then makes some antidotal connections to the Second Comforter in later chapters.

He does a reasonable job talking about the topic, but not actually addressing the how – but alludes to knowing how.  To some it might be inspiring to realize that it is something that we should actually grasp for and seek to achieve, and it is achievable – but for more I would worry about relying too much on the content in this book.  Focus on the scriptures, until a more reliable source emerges for the topic.

Suggestions:  I would recommend not buying the book, and just reading your scriptures focusing on the topic.  It is all in there – and you will learn more from the Spirit than you will from Mr. Snuffer.

I hope you have enjoyed this review, and I encourage your to follow this blog as I update more reviews in the coming days, weeks, months, etc.  Please feel free to also follow my YouTube page – however, I enjoy writing more than being on camera!

  1. Question for you - I'm interested in receiving angels and having heavenly visions - why doesn't the LDS church leadership have these anymore? It seems Denver Snuffer claims to have seen Jesus - why doesn't Thomas Monson or any of the current 12 see Jesus?

    1. Great question - and I believe a worthy desire. In absence of doing too lengthy of a response - I would simply say that the LDS church leadership does have those experiences. Although, they don't write them up and publish them for mass consumption (and profit), they do share them in talks and speeches. There are times when they are commented on or shared - but usually not paid much attention to. A close reading of Conference talks over the last 20 years will reveal quite a bit of experiences... and then the reminder from section 64:63 "that which cometh from above must be spoken of with care and by constraint of the spirit." I also believe this plays into the intent of many of these experiences - as they are intensely personal, and not always positive experiences (Moroni talks about the purpose of angels is to call men to repentance, etc.)... although they do not publish it for mass consumption - I think you would be surprised how often it is spoken of (and those who have ear to hear - hear it). I personally, also know of the general membership of the church that has also shared personal experiences that are equally sacred and similar. So that is a long winded way of saying - I believe they do - and I believe the message of the restoration is that all "might speak in the name of Christ" (d/c 1), and that all "might see him and know." (Just my two cents... thank you so much for commenting)
