Studies in the Book of Mormon – Avraham Gileadi – 3 Stars
Title: Studies
in the Book of Mormon
Author: Avraham
Gileadi
Publisher: Brigham
Distributing
Year: Softcover
2012
Rating: 3 Stars
Price and
Purchasing Options: This book has not had enough distribution and market
penetration to find many of them in second hand options (Deseret Industries,
and the like). However, it is readily
available on Amazon, and during Book of Mormon Sunday School years you may find
it in Deseret Book. Because it is soft
cover you will probably find it for around $15.
Review: This
is kind of a fun little book.
This is not a full fledged commentary on the Book of
Mormon. Instead, it is intended to
pattern after the Sunday School manual for the year that we study the Book of
Mormon. Each lesson is given a chapter
in this book that covers one aspect of consideration related to the lesson in
the Sunday School Manual. It is not
comprehensive, nor is it intended to be.
I think that is where the magic of the book comes into play.
Each chapter has a neat little few pages of
consideration, and most of them are not antidotal or typical, but seem to add
depth to the topic. It also isn’t about
giving new insight, but giving new information regarding the background and
political establishments being discussed during the lesson – allowing the
reader to gain more insights in the topic for themselves.
This is a great book for the teacher and student
alike. It seems intended to allow
someone to review one chapter a week and be prepared with thoughts for the
upcoming Sunday School lesson.
A note on Gileadi – he is one of the more underrated
scholars in the church. He has a unique
background and a somewhat checkered past within the church, but all of that
also seems to give him a powerful perspective on the atonement of Christ. In good standing with the church, he uses his
scholarship in Old Testament (specifically Isaiah) studies to give depth and
insight to Mormonism and the Book of Mormon.
But he is also not a “light” read ever!
In fact, this is probably the “lightest” of his texts. He doesn’t’ conform his writing for the
masses – but this is his closest attempt.
He normally, unapologetically writes with depth and scholarship.
I would recommend this book as a good bathroom book as
well. Each chapter doesn’t require the
Book of Mormon with you, and each chapter has an interesting and unique
idea. They are also short and give you a
good foundation to think about.
If you are looking for something easy to read to be Book
of Mormon focused… this is a great text.
Suggestions: Pick it up and read it if it sounds
interesting to you.
