Review: This
was interesting to read.
This book for the most part takes various saying,
stories, and metaphors taught by the Buddha – and shares them in an English translation. This book is fun to read – and helps to give
insight as to why Buddhism seems to be something that can be universally
applied. For the most part, the maxims
and lesson within the teachings of the Buddha seem to be applicable regardless
of personal religious practice. To some
extent easily applied in all ways of life.
In this context you begin to see why and how there are
Christian-Buddhist, or the likes. By
focusing on the principles rather than the doctrines, they can be applied in
every capacity.
With that being said, I would warn you. The text itself isn’t everything you need in
order to understand the text. It would
serve any reader better to have background and insight as to the teachings of
Buddhism generally as well as the history of the Buddha. The text I happen to read was only the source
material, and no background. I was okay
with this because I had studied the teaching and life of Buddha in another
context. However, if I was to make a
recommendation – I would rather recommend for the common reader a book that
would have more content and background on those items.
I will keep this review short – mostly because my
enjoyment is straightforward – but also because the book will stand for
itself. I really enjoyed it – however, I
would say that it is not necessary for any LDS member to read, but if you were
curious you would enjoy it; and nothing in the text would shake or question any
LDS principles.
Suggestions: Pick it up and read it if it sounds
interesting to you.
I hope you have enjoyed this review, and I encourage you
to follow this blog as I update more reviews in the coming days, weeks, months,
etc. Please feel free to also follow my
YouTube page – however, I enjoy writing more than being on camera!
